Choosing your tree.

What to look for.

Always choose your tree from somehere you can trust -  if you buy one from 'a guy in a layby' and all the needles are on the floor a week before Christmas, where will you take it back to to complain?

When choosing the tree-

  • Look at it, does it look fresh? The needles should look lush and waxy.

  • Feel it, make sure the branches feel strong and bendy.

  • Lift it, it should feel heavy relative to its size.-

  • Check none of the branches or leader is snapped.

  • If it is in a net take it out and give it a twirl - most places can put it back in a sleeve for you.

If the tree feels light, looks dull or the branches and needles are brittle the chances are it has been cut a while and has lost a lot of its moisture, this is the reason trees loose their needles.

Most Christmas trees sold in the UK are imported and some have been cut as early as the begining of November - no wonder they've had enough by mid-December.

How to look after your tree
  • Acclimatize the tree - leave the tree outside or in the garage sat in a bucket of water.

  • Cut a thin slice off the bottom of the butt or strip a couple of inches of bark from its base to help it 'drink'

  • Use a stand that will hold water, make sure the stand is big enough for the tree.

  • Top the water up daily - you would be amazed how much it will drink.

  • Place it as far from a heat source as possible.

  • Buy some chocolate baubles.

  • Dispose of the tree at a recycle centre, Ogden water put them to great environmental use.
